The Piece of Cake Race was founded by David Auker in 1975. Over the years it has been held in various locations in the Willamette valley before moving to a location north of Vancouver for a short time. A few years back POC returned to its roots with a new course near the community of Perrydale. POC is one of Oregon's longest continuously held road races, with courses that have always been flat, fast and windswept... but never a piece of cake to ride.
Another hallmark of POC has been its prizes of cakes – a tradition that was begun by David and Sarah Auker. The 2012 POC will continue this tradition, with winner's cakes provided by the Perrydale Girls Softball team as part of a fundraising effort.
The course:
The 2012 course follows the same 17.4 mile clockwise circuit as last year. It includes 3+ miles of gravel road. It’s mostly flat, with a few gently rolling hills. Sturdy tires and wheels are strongly advised -- this is no place for your 250gm silk tubulars and 1,000gm carbon wheel bling. A "virtual centerline" rule will be enforced in the unpaved areas.
Start is located at Perrydale School (they are kindly allowing us to use their parking lot) at 7445 Southwest Perrydale Road, Amity, OR 97101-9725.
Fields:
We have changed some of the categories around this year. The primary changes are new 40+ Cat 3 / Masters 50+; Mens Cat 4/5; and Women's 4/5 fields. We will run a single Juniors field, recommending that this race is best for older, stronger junior riders. Additionally, there will be field limits this year - Men 4/5 are strongly advised to register early. Registration will be open on-line very soon!!
Prizes and Sponsors:
As part of the Oregon Cup, POC will be distributing $750 to the top 15 Cat 1/2 Men and $250 to the top 4 Cat 1/2 Women. Oregon Cup leaders will have free entry into this race. The defending Cat 1/2 champions are Jake Hansen and Sue Butler.
In addition to prizes, all category winners will receive cakes plus some fantastic Paris/Roubaix-esque trophies by Tom Ghilarducci and Danny Knudsen. I mean, these trophies are cool... and well worth suffering for.
Cash and fantastic merchandise prizes are thanks to our fantastic sponsors: Bike N Hike, Hopworks, Kiwi Outdoor Rep Group, CycleSoles, Nancy's, and Enzo's. Give them all your thanks for supporting this event.
Behavior notes:
Getting permits to run a bicycle race in a rural community is no small feat... not to mention permits from two counties and ODOT. Please model good OBRA citizen behavior so we will be invited back next year. Absolutely no alcohol consumption is permitted... even after race libation.
Toilet facilities will be supplied. We will be offering the same bounty on public urination: photograph and identify a violator and receive free entry to this event.
Please pack out your own trash: do not litter anywhere on the course or start area. Leave no trace.

Hopworks Bike Bar Grand Opening
Tuesday, 30 August 2011 05:22
bicycleattorney.com riders turned out in large numbers to support the grand opening of Christian's newest location, BikeBar at 3947 North Williams. Great beer and food located along one of Portland's busiest bike commuter corridors in the ecoFlats building (hmmm... how convienient). Christian kicked off the festivities by hosting a huge ride from his original location on Powell to the new location. Hundreds joined in and even more came to enjoy great beer and food. Check out the video and see if you can pick out all the bicycleattorney.com riders!
